I’ve been thinking a lot about what AI is actually going to mean for banks — beyond the headlines, the chatbots and the endless talk about “transformation”.
Because this is starting to become much bigger than simply introducing new technology.
Banks such as DBS, JPMorganChase, BBVA and Commonwealth Bank are already investing heavily in AI — not just to automate individual tasks, but to change the way their organisations actually operate.
DBS, for example, has deployed more than 1,500 AI models across hundreds of use cases. JPMorganChase has rolled out its own generative AI platform to around 200,000 employees. BBVA is talking openly about moving towards an AI-enabled operating model across the organisation.
And that’s the bit I find really interesting. Having spent much of my career working in banking, operations and transformation, I’ve seen plenty of major technology programmes.
But AI feels different........ Because if it is genuinely embedded into a business, it starts to change far more than the technology.
It changes how people make decisions.
It changes how customers are served.
It changes how risk is identified.
It changes processes, roles and potentially whole organisational structures.
And I think this raises a much bigger question for businesses.
It’s no longer simply:
“Where can we use AI?”
It’s becoming:
“What does our business look like when AI becomes part of the way we work every day?”
For me, that’s where data becomes absolutely critical.
AI is only as useful as the information behind it. If the data is poor, fragmented or difficult to access, adding AI doesn’t suddenly solve the problem.
The organisations that get this right won’t necessarily be the ones with the most technology.
They’ll be the ones that can connect the dots between data, insight, decisions and action— while bringing their people with them.
And while the banks may be among the organisations leading this shift, I don’t think this conversation is going to remain a banking one for very long.
Every business should probably be asking itself the same question:
If AI really is going to change the way we operate, are we actually ready for it?
